The gem of the Val di Chiana, this town is undoubtedly of Etruscan origin and is mentioned by Virgil, in his Eneid, when he describes the funeral of Polydorus, the son of the Trojan king Priam. Besides its mythological associations, Cortona attracts visitors for its monuments, its churches, and the Fortress of Girfalco, built in 1561 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de Medici. Also worth a visit is the beautiful Convent of Celle, founded by St. Francis in 1211.
